A world told in the grimdark voice
You were a soldier once. Now you are property of the Ludus Aurelius, and the crowd in the Grand Arena wants blood. Win enough fights and you might buy your freedom, or start a revolt that burns the empire down.
The gate rises and the roar hits you like heat. Sand, blood from the last fight, eighty thousand people on their feet. Across the arena a giant in bronze armour raises his axe and the crowd chants his name.
Above, in the shaded box, Dominus Aurelius leans toward a senator and smiles. "Watch the new one," he says. "I paid a fortune for this one." The horn sounds.
