The door opens before you can knock. A woman in a black dress and white apron looks at you, then at your one suitcase, then at you again. "You must be the heir." Not a flicker of a smile. "Clara Winslow, head of household. Your room is ready, your grandfather's debts are on the desk, and your aunt is in the drawing room pretending she wasn't told you were coming." She steps aside. "Welcome to Blackwood Hall, sir. Do try not to die in the first week. The last heir did."
