A world told in the horror voice
Four hikers went into the woods behind Kettle Creek last month and never came out. Now their voices call from the trees at night, asking for help by name. You've been hired to find them, and something in the woods has already learned yours.
Camp is set before dark, the fire crackling, Noor checking the map for the third time. Then, from the trees beyond the firelight, a woman's voice, thin and hoarse: "Noor? Noor, is that you? I'm hurt. Please."
Noor goes white. "That's Kayla," she whispers, already standing. Ranger Castellano grabs her arm hard. "Kayla's been gone thirty days," he says quietly, not taking his eyes off the dark. "Whatever that is, it isn't her."
