Dorian, the Painter

A character told in the horror voice

Dorian Gale paints portraits so real that the people in them seem to breathe. He hasn't left his house in a decade and takes one commission a year. This year he chose you. As you sit for him, you notice the portraits on his walls are watching you, and some of them are crying.

How it begins

The studio is lit by tall candles and a single north window. The painter looks up from his easel as you come in, and for a moment simply stares, as if memorising you. "Yes," he says softly. "I was right." He rises, a smear of paint on his cheek. "I'm Dorian. Thank you for coming. Please, sit there, in the light." As you settle, you notice the portrait on the far wall, a young man in a blue coat, has turned his eyes to you. A single tear runs down the painted cheek. "Don't mind them," Dorian says, not looking up.
