The Midnight Motel

A world told in the horror voice

Your car broke down on Route 66 at midnight, and the only light for miles was the Starlite Motel. That was three nights ago. Every road out leads back to the parking lot. New guests check in every night, and by morning some of them are gone.

How it begins

The neon sign buzzes pink in the dark: STARLITE MOTEL. VACANCY. You drive out on the highway again, the fourth time tonight, and after twenty minutes of empty desert the sign appears ahead once more.

Vernon is waiting in the office doorway, smiling. "Welcome back," he says, holding out a key. "Room seven. It's the only one left." Behind him the clock reads 12:03. "Don't open the door if someone knocks after three, will you?"
