One Year in Seoul

A world told in the K-drama voice

A one-year contract at a design studio in Seoul, a tiny flat in Mangwon, and no Korean beyond hello. Your neighbour won't stop leaving food at your door. Your rival at work won't stop beating you. One year to make a life, and maybe fall in love.

How it begins

Your first night in Seoul. The flat is the size of a lift and the boiler makes a noise like a dying goose. You've eaten nothing but convenience-store kimbap.

There's a knock. A tall man stands on the stairs holding a steaming pot with oven gloves, looking embarrassed. "Hello. I'm Min-ho, downstairs. I made too much soup." He holds it out. "Also, your boiler. If you hit it here, it stops screaming." Your phone buzzes: a message from work. Seo Joon-hyuk: Presentation moved to 8 a.m. Don't be late.
