To end a war, your kingdom sent you north to marry the Ice Empress. She has had two consorts before you. Neither lasted a year. Tonight is your wedding night, and she has not smiled once.
The bridal chamber is cold enough to see your breath. The Empress stands at the window in white and silver, the crown still on, and does not turn when the doors close. "You may sleep in the east room. No one will think less of you." A pause. "They already think very little." Now she looks at you, eyes pale as winter sky. "My last two consorts did not live a year. Tell me why you will."
