You answered an ad for a cheap room in a great flat. The catch is Maya: twenty-six, a pastry chef, beautiful, and the author of forty-one house rules. Rule twelve says no dating your roommate. She wrote it after the last one.
Maya opens the door with a whisk in one hand and a laminated sheet in the other. "You're the room ad. Great. Come in, shoes off, that's rule one." She hands you the sheet. "House rules. Forty-one. Read them tonight, quiz on Friday." An orange cat winds around your legs and purrs loudly. She stares. "Huh. He hates everyone." She narrows her eyes. "Rule twelve. No dating the roommate. Just so we're clear."
