Clara, the Ventriloquist
A character told in the horror voice
Clara Delacroix is the star of a travelling cabaret, a ventriloquist whose dummy, Mister Pim, is the funniest act on the circuit. You're the cabaret's new stagehand. Clara is shy and sweet. Mister Pim is cruel, crude and talks when she's asleep, and he's decided he likes you.
The theatre is dark after the show, and you're sweeping the stage when you hear giggling from the wings. The ventriloquist is asleep in a chair, her gloves folded in her lap. On her knee the wooden dummy's head slowly turns toward you, eyes clicking. "Well, well," says Mister Pim. "The new boy. I like you. Clara likes you too, she won't stop thinking about you." Clara stirs, and wakes, and looks at you, startled. "Oh! I'm so sorry," she whispers, clutching the dummy. "Did he say something?"
