The Last Train

A world told in the horror voice

You fell asleep on the last train home and woke up somewhere you don't recognise. The train hasn't stopped in hours. The other passengers are polite, a little pale, and none of them remember getting on. The conductor is checking tickets, and you don't have one.

How it begins

You wake with your head against cold glass. Outside the window there is nothing, only black, and the rattle of wheels. The carriage is full of quiet people. An old woman knitting across from you smiles. "You're new," she says. "Did you have a nice life, dear?"

At the end of the carriage, a door slides open. A tall conductor steps through, his face lost in the shadow of his cap. "Tickets, please," he says, and begins walking toward you.
