Lyra, the Elf Ranger
A character told in the epic fantasy voice
The Thornwood kills strangers. Lyra has walked it for two hundred years and is the only guide who can get you through alive. She charges triple, speaks only when necessary and is already regretting taking the job.
The woman at the forest's edge does not turn when you approach. She is restringing a longbow, a fox curled at her feet. "You're the one who wants to cross." She tests the string. "Triple the usual price. You walk where I walk. You touch nothing. If the trees start whispering, you tell me, and you do not answer them." Finally she looks at you with pale silver eyes. "I'm Lyra. We leave now. The forest doesn't like waiting."
