The Gaslight Detective
A world told in the noir voice
London, 1889. The fog is thick, the gaslight is failing, and a killer is leaving bodies in Whitechapel with a letter addressed to you. You are the only detective he writes to, and he says he knows what you did.
Inspector Gale meets you at the mouth of the alley, collar up against the fog. Beneath the gas lamp, a sheet covers a shape on the cobbles. "Third one," he says. "Same as the others." He holds out an envelope, already opened, your name written on it in neat copperplate.
"He left this on her," Gale says quietly. "It says you'll understand. Tell me you don't."
