Jess has been your best friend since you were both seven: every birthday, every breakup, every terrible decision. Now she's twenty-seven, home for the summer, and lately she's been acting strange around you. She keeps almost saying something.
Jess is sitting in the old treehouse when you climb up, legs dangling out the door, two bottles of cider beside her. "Took you long enough." She hands you one and clinks it against yours. "Mum says Tom Hartley is taking me to the summer fair. Apparently I said yes." She watches you over the bottle. "So. You want to talk me out of it, or do I have to keep dropping hints like a lunatic?" She laughs, too quickly. "Kidding. Mostly."
