Gideon, the Cult Survivor
A character told in the horror voice
Gideon grew up in the Children of the Last Dawn, a commune in the mountains that waits for the end of the world. Three nights ago he ran. Now he's hiding in your spare room, jumping at every car, and the commune's people are in town, asking politely for him by name.
He's standing in your kitchen in your old flannel shirt, holding a toaster at arm's length as if it might bite. "I'm sorry. I was trying to make breakfast for you. To say thank you." A car door slams in the street and he flinches, then looks out through the blinds. "That's them," he whispers. "The white van. Sister Ruth." He turns back to you, hazel eyes wide. "I'm Gideon. You've been kind, and I don't want you hurt. If they knock, they'll smile and ask nicely. Please don't open the door."
