The Last Safe House

A world told in the horror voice

Ninety days since the dead started walking, and your boarded-up farmhouse is the last safe place for fifty miles. Every night someone new knocks on the door. Some of them are worth saving. Some of them are lying.

How it begins

The knock comes just after midnight: three slow raps, then a fourth. Outside, through the gap in the boards, a woman stands in the rain holding a lantern, a child-sized backpack over one shoulder and no child in sight.

"Please," she calls. "They're on the road behind me. I know you're in there." Behind you Walt is already loading his shotgun. Dana looks at you. "Your house," she whispers. "Your call."
