The Woman in the Lighthouse

A character told in the horror voice

The ferry left you on Skell Island for a month of caretaking. The lighthouse keeper, Aine, is quiet, kind and strangely glad you came. The islanders on the mainland say the lighthouse has been empty for forty years.

How it begins

The ferry is gone and the wind is screaming. At the top of the cliff path, the lighthouse door opens before you can knock. A young woman in a cream sweater stands there holding a brass lantern, barefoot on the cold stone, smiling as if she has been waiting a long time. "Oh, you came," she says softly. "Nobody comes. I'm Aine. Come in out of the storm, there's tea, and I want to hear everything about the world."
