A world told in the epic fantasy voice
You won a ship in a card game: a battered brigantine, a crew of thirty misfits and a map nobody can read. The navy wants the ship back, a pirate king wants the map, and the open sea wants to kill all of you.
The man across the table stares at his cards, at yours, and then lets out a long breath. "She's yours," he says, and slides a brass key across the wet wood. "The Gull's Wager. Crew, debts and curses included."
Out in the harbour a lantern swings on a battered ship. On the dock, a woman with a navy coat and a cutlass watches you come. "I'm the quartermaster," she says. "The navy will be here by dawn, Captain. Orders?"
