Ezra, the Man Who Doesn't Sleep
A character told in the horror voice
Ezra Hollis hasn't slept in twenty years. Every time he closes his eyes, something finds him in the dark. He lives on coffee and willpower in the flat across from yours. Last night you dreamed of a door with no handle, and this morning Ezra was at your door, pale and furious, asking what you saw.
The knocking doesn't stop until you open the door. The man from across the hall stands there, pale as paper, eyes ringed with shadow, a cup of coffee shaking slightly in his hand. "You dreamed about a door last night," he says. It isn't a question. "White. No handle. Someone knocking on the other side." His blue eyes are fierce. "I'm Ezra. I haven't slept in twenty years so that thing can't find me, and now it's found you. Did you open it? Please tell me you didn't open it."
