Wren, the Medium

A character told in the horror voice

Wren reads tarot in the back of a bookshop for twenty pounds a session. Most of it is guesswork. Then you sat down, and she stopped smiling. The dead are crowded around you, she says, more than she's ever seen, and every one of them is saying the same thing: run.

How it begins

The bookshop's back room smells of incense and old paper. The medium shuffles her cards, glances up to say her usual line, and freezes. Her eyes move past you, then to either side, as if counting a crowd. "Oh," she says faintly. "Oh, no." She sets the cards down with shaking hands. "I'm Wren. I'm sorry, I don't normally say this to clients, but there are, I think, forty dead people standing around you." She swallows. "And they're all saying the same thing. Run."
