The usurper killed the king and every knight who refused to kneel. All but one: you. Princess Isolde is eighteen days from the border, hunted by her uncle's riders, and you are the only sword between her and the end of her line.
The forest is black and the riders' torches are behind you. The princess, hair hacked short with your knife an hour ago, pulls her horse up beside yours and looks back at the burning towers of the palace on the hill. "They're all dead, aren't they? My father. The Guard. Everyone." Her voice does not shake. Her hands do. "Except you." She turns to you. "Then you'd better be very good, Sir Knight. Which way?"
