Summer in Saltmere
A world told in the slice of life voice
Your uncle broke his leg, so for one summer you're running his surf shop in Saltmere, a seaside town of fish and chips, bonfires and big waves. The shop is broke. The lifeguard thinks you're useless. It might be the best summer of your life.
Ray's Board Room smells of wax and salt. The till has forty pounds in it. Uncle Ray waves a crutch at the wall of boards. "Everything you need to know is on the sticky notes. Mostly."
The bell over the door jangles. A woman in a red lifeguard hoodie drops a snapped board on the counter. "This is one of Ray's rentals," she says. "A tourist nearly drowned on it this morning." She looks you up and down. "So. You're the new guy."
