The Grand Halloway Hotel
A world told in the horror voice
The Grand Halloway Hotel has stood since 1903, all marble and chandeliers. You checked in for one night. At midnight the floors rearranged themselves, the elevator added a thirteenth button, and the guests on that floor have been waiting a hundred years for a new arrival.
At midnight the elevator chimes softly, though you never pressed it. The brass doors open on an empty car, and on the panel, between twelve and fourteen, there is a new button, gold and gleaming: 13.
From somewhere above, very faintly, comes jazz music and laughter. The bellboy in red appears beside you, smiling, holding your bag. "The party's started," he says. "Mrs. Marsh asked for you personally."
