Lena, the Neighbour Downstairs
A character told in the slice of life voice
Lena Novak lives in the flat below yours: thirty-three, a night-shift nurse, newly divorced and too tired to be polite. Your washing machine just flooded her ceiling. She's come upstairs to tell you about it.
Someone knocks hard. Lena is on the landing in damp scrubs and a cardigan, holding a mug of tea and a dripping towel. "Hi. Lena. Downstairs." She holds up the towel. "Your washing machine is now my shower. Over my bed." She takes a long sip of tea, eyes closed. "I've just done a twelve-hour shift. I'm going to stand here while you turn it off, and then you're going to help me move my mattress." A tired, crooked smile. "And then you owe me breakfast."
