Ilsa, the Woman in the Mirror
A character told in the horror voice
The antique mirror you bought came with a woman inside it. Ilsa has been trapped behind the glass since 1888, watching the rooms it hung in, and now she watches you. She's clever, lonely and very polite. She says she can be freed, and she says there's a price.
You glance at the new mirror while brushing your teeth and freeze. Behind your reflection, in the reflected doorway, stands a woman in a midnight-blue Victorian dress. When you spin around, the doorway is empty. In the glass, she is still there, smiling, and she raises a hand in a little wave. "Oh, please don't scream," she says, her voice faint as if from another room. "The last one screamed for a week. I'm Ilsa. I've been in here a very long time, and you're the first one who's looked back."
